London has countless amazing places to eat, but there's something uniquely special about Borough Market. It's chaotic, it's delicious, and it's the perfect place to spend an afternoon with someone you love — wandering from stall to stall, trying everything. Zane and I spent an entire afternoon here during our London trip, and honestly? It might have been one of our favorite moments together.

Why Borough Market?

Borough Market has been a staple of London since the 1100s, but the food scene there is anything but outdated. It's a mix of traditional British vendors, international cuisine, and some genuinely creative food concepts. The best part? You can graze your way through multiple incredible dishes without committing to one sit-down restaurant. It's perfect for people who want to try everything.

Market Hours: Open Tuesday-Sunday, 10 am-5 pm (Closed Mondays)

Best Time to Visit: Late morning or early afternoon to avoid the biggest crowds, but honestly, it's worth going whenever you can make it.

Stop 1: The Black Pig — "The Best One" Pork Sandwich

Price: £12 | What to Order: "The Best One"

Our first stop, and honestly? This set the bar impossibly high for the rest of the day.

The Black Pig specializes in gourmet pork sandwiches, and their signature "The Best One" is genuinely worthy of the name. Here's what makes it special:

  • Slow-roasted pork shoulder — cooked for 10 hours and finished over coals in a Big Green Egg grill

  • Honey truffle mayonnaise — adds this incredible umami depth

  • Fennel apple slaw — provides brightness and crunch

  • 30-month aged Parmesan from Reggio Emilia — the real deal, not shredded stuff

  • Toasted ciabatta — from Bread Ahead Bakery (also at the market)

  • Peperoncini — just a hint of spice to tie it all together

The pork is so tender it practically melts in your mouth, and that aged Parmesan adds this nutty, complex flavor that takes it from "really good sandwich" to "I'm thinking about this sandwich weeks later." Zane and I literally just stood there for a moment after that first bite. No words needed.

Pro Tip: The queue moves faster than it looks. If you see a line, don't skip it — it's worth the 10-minute wait.

Stop 2: Bath Dairy — Three Cheese Mac and Cheese

Price: ~£10 | What to Order: 3 Cheese Mac and Cheese

From one incredible vendor to another. Bath Dairy is the street food arm of Bath Soft Cheese Co, a family-run cheese operation in Somerset that's been making incredible cheese for four generations.

What makes their mac and cheese stand out:

  • Made with their signature cheeses — Wyfe of Bath, Bath Soft, and Bath Blue

  • Creamy, luxurious sauce — it's basically cheese heaven in a bowl

  • Perfectly cooked pasta — not mushy, not undercooked

  • Generous portions — one serving is legitimately enough for two people

This is comfort food elevated. It's the kind of dish that tastes homemade but better because they actually know what they're doing with cheese. Zane and I split one, and we were so full from the pork sandwich that we could barely finish it — but we did, because it was that good.

Stop 3: Turnips — Mango Smoothie

Price: Varies | What to Order: Mango Smoothie

We needed something fresh and fruity at this point, and Turnips — yes, the same vendor as the chocolate strawberries — also makes incredible smoothies.

Turnips has been at Borough Market since 1988, sourcing high-quality produce from independent farms around Britain and Europe. Their mango smoothie is:

  • Made with fresh, ripe mangoes — you can taste the quality

  • Smooth and creamy — not icy or watered down

  • The perfect palate cleanser — especially between heavy, rich foods

It was exactly what we needed at that point in our food tour. Refreshing, not too sweet, and it gave us a little energy boost.

Stop 4: Ginger Pig — Sausage Roll

Price: ~£5-7 | What to Order: Hot Sausage Roll

The Ginger Pig is a legendary London butcher that's been part of Borough Market since the 1990s relaunch. Their sausage rolls are freshly baked every morning and have a cult following for good reason.

What makes them special:

  • Flaky, buttery pastry — genuinely lush and golden

  • Incredibly seasoned pork filling — hints of ground mustard seed

  • Just the right amount of spice — enough to make the meat pop without overpowering

  • Still warm when you buy it — they're baking these throughout the day

This is the kind of sausage roll that reminds you why British food has fans around the world. It's simple, it's perfectly executed, and it's absolutely delicious.

Pro Tip: Go earlier in the day to catch them fresh out of the oven. They sell out regularly because they're that good.

Stop 5: Turnips — Chocolate-Covered Strawberries

Price: £7.50-£8.50 | What to Order: Chocolate Strawberries

Okay, here's the thing about Turnips' chocolate strawberries — they've gone viral on TikTok, and you might think that means they're overhyped. You would be wrong.

The Facts:

  • Each cup contains 12-15 fresh, wild strawberries — genuinely premium fruit

  • Thick, gooey chocolate sauce — not a thin drizzle

  • From a vendor that's been sourcing incredible produce since 1988 — they know what they're doing

  • Genuinely Instagram-worthy — but also genuinely delicious

These became famous because they're actually worth the hype. The strawberries are fresh and sweet, the chocolate is rich, and the combination is just... chef's kiss. Zane and I shared one... and then got another on our way out.

The Controversy: In late 2023, Borough Market briefly banned these because they didn't fit the "fruit, veg, or related produce" category. But after massive backlash on social media, they reversed the decision within five days. The internet spoke, and Borough Market listened.

Stop 6: Shellseekers Fish & Game — Fresh Shrimp

Price: Varies by market price | What to Order: Fresh Shrimp or Seafood of the Day

Shellseekers Fish & Game is one of the most respected seafood vendors in London. The business started 27 years ago when founder Darren Brown began hand-diving for scallops off the Devon coast, and now they provide some of the best kitchens in the country with sustainably caught seafood.

What They Offer:

  • Hand-dived scallops — their original product and still their specialty

  • Sustainably caught fish and shellfish — they care about where their seafood comes from

  • Fresh shrimp and crustaceans — available daily

  • An impressive game selection — if you're interested in that sort of thing

We grabbed some fresh shrimp from them, and the quality was immediately apparent. These weren't those flavorless frozen shrimp — these were sweet, tender, and tasted like the ocean. It was the perfect finale to our Borough Market adventure.

Borough Market Food Tour: The Complete Cost Breakdown

Here's what we spent (approximate):

  • The Black Pig ("The Best One"): £12

  • Bath Dairy (3 Cheese Mac & Cheese): £10

  • Turnips (Mango Smoothie): ~£4-5

  • Ginger Pig (Sausage Roll): ~£6

  • Turnips (Chocolate Strawberries): £8

  • Shellseekers (Fresh Shrimp): ~£8-10

Total per person: ~£48-51 (and we got 6 items to share)

For London food prices, especially in such a central location, this is genuinely reasonable. And honestly? The quality is exceptional.

Tips for Your Borough Market Food Tour

1. Go on a weekday if possible. Saturdays and Sundays get incredibly crowded. If you can visit Tuesday-Friday, do it.

2. Don't eat before you go. You'll want to graze and try multiple things. Come hungry.

3. Take photos. The light is beautiful, especially in the afternoon. Borough Market is genuinely one of the most photogenic food destinations in London.

4. Share everything. The best part of our Borough Market experience was sharing bites with Zane, tasting each other's food, and discussing what we loved. It's a food tour designed for experiencing together.

The Bottom Line

Borough Market is a must-do in London, and honestly? It might be one of the most fun food experiences we had during our entire London trip. It's casual, it's delicious, and it's the kind of place where you can eat your way through different cuisines and price points all in one afternoon.

Whether you hit the exact vendors we did or create your own food tour, Borough Market delivers. Come hungry, come with someone you enjoy sharing food with, and come ready to be impressed.
